The Prodigal Son

Jesus told a story about a man and his two sons:

Once a man had two sons, the younger son went to  his father and said:  ”Give me my share of the property.”  So the father divided the  property between his two sons.  Soon the younger son gathered his belongings and left.  He traveled to a far country  where he wasted away his wealth.

When his money was gone, there arose a famine in that land.  Soon he had nothing to eat.  He went to work for a man who owned pigs.   His job was to feed and care for the pigs.  He would gladly eat what the pigs were eating because no one offered him food.  He finally came to his senses.  He remembered that his father’s workers had plenty of food.  And here he was starving to death.  After thinking about it, he decided to go back to  his father and tell him:  ”Father, I have sinned against God and you.  I am no longer good enough to be called your son.  Please  treat me like one of your workers.”

The younger son got up and headed home.  When he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming.  His father felt sorry for him, he ran to him and hugged and kissed him.  The son said to his father:  ”Father, I have sinned against God and you.  I am no longer good enough to be called your son.”  The father was so happy to see his son.  He told the servants:  ”Hurry and bring the best clothes and put them on him.  Give him a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet.  Get the best calf and prepare for a celebration.  My son was dead and now he has come back to life.  He was lost, but now has been found.”

The older son was coming home from work and heard the music and dancing.  He asked one of the servants what was happening.  The servant told him that his brother had come home and that they were ordered to kill the best calf so they could celebrate.  The older brother was very angry and would not go into the house.  His father bagged him to come in.  But he said to his father:  ”I worked for you like a slave and you never gave me a calf so I could give a dinner for my friends.  My brother has wasted his share of wealth and now he comes home and you ordered the best calf to be killed for a feast.  ”His father replied:  ”My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.  We should be happy and glad to celebrate his coming home.  Your brother was dead, but he is now alive.  He was lost and has been found!”

Jesus has provided a way for you to come home!

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.    John 3:16
